What's in Your News Diet? Permalink.

In my daily capacity as a Media Assassin and Government Legislation Analyst, I'm increasingly amazed by the diet most people accept when consuming news

News is food for your brain. It determines many of our daily actions and long term strategies and goals. Left unchecked, it has the potential to turn a divinely designed machine into an obese unproductive couch potato merely awaiting its next feeding.

A picture named home_saladbar.jpgWhen asked, I wager most would scoff at the idea of consuming our daily news from McDonalds or Pizza Hut.

Yet hundreds of millions are content with accepting the frothy mix that is controlled and served by FaceBook's News Faucet. Read this article, because it shows you the illusion FB conjures that you are in control of your news diet.

I'm sure the same holds true for twitter and other social networks that distribute news

Instead of eating a Big Mac that is baked by someone else, I prefer to hit the salad bar. That's the place where I get to make my own salad, see all the lovely bits that are in my bowl and pick and choose which pieces of lettuce I do or don't want to fish out with my fork.

Anyone can do this by using RSS news feeds. They've been around for close to a decade, no company owns the technology and they are available from mainstream organizations and individuals alike.

Just like the salad bar, you need to put a little work into picking your own ingredients, and filling up your bowl. But it's also all you can eat! And if you want to dump chocolate sauce over your nicoise, that's entirely your choice and you can remove it just as easily.

The salad bowl has always been the problem. Google reader gives you the ingredients with no easy way to toss the salad.

The River of News concept and software is the perfect tool for the job.

Feel free to look into my salad bowl at any time, I also have a list of my [current] ingredients. That list is all rss feeds, clicking on any one of them will expand so you can see the latest stories, but the real fun is in the eating!

Stringing it All Together Permalink.

Exciting things happening in OPML Server Land.

A picture named macrame-beginners-800x800.jpgDave is really working hard on shoring up the WorldOutline, and as a part of that today we see the first integration between the WO, Radio2 and the Scripting2 tool that produces this blog.

This is happenig with 'Menus Everywhere'

I now have a persistent menu that runs on my Homepage at curry.com, my Blog, and my Linkblog

The nice thing about the way Dave works is that all templates (and code!0 is openly and freely available, so you can start by replicating his templates and then build from there. That's where I'm at right now, as you can see my sites look very similar to scripting.com :-)

Samsung GalaxyNote - 1 Week Later Permalink.

Part two in the series of my experience using the Samsung Galaxy Note Smartphone.

General Observations:

The power button, which also controls the screen lock/unlock is in the expected place, but easy to hit by accident, thus locking the device when not wanted. No show stopper, but irritating and due to the phone's size, a somewhat frequent occurrence.

Battery life: Appeared to be a little light during the first few days of use, but that is probably to be expected because I was really glued to the screen for hours on end, which didn't leave enough juice for a full days worth of usage. After a couple days though my usage dropped back to normal and it if sufficient. I can use the phone for 4 hours non-stop (yes, I do this sometimes) before needing to connect power.

Keyboard: there are several options available on my AT&T model, and I like the Samsung one the best, but it did take a bit to customize the spellchecker to perform *some* corrections, but not all, just enough for me to add custom words to the dictionary and not get caught too many times with a funky word that wasn't intended.

The Note function, who the heck actually uses this? It does come in handy if you just want to take a screenshot and annotate it. Two taps and you're off. I might use this once day, no more.

LTE: This is my first 4G LTE phone and the speed test when not moving (like in the car) whows 20Mb/sec down and 5Mb/sec up. Unreal. However, when in the car, I find my self reloading pages often, because the first try won't load. I wonder if this is a DNS thing. The reloads are blazingly fast,

A picture named YeahItsHuge.jpgOverall I'm loving the Note, taking into account that I have big hands, it's easily usabe with one hand and the experience is that perfect mix of tablet like screen that fits in my pocket. It's light enough not to be bothersome and doesn't slip out of my pocket when seated, except for one pair of blue jeans I have that have shallow pockets and are a bit tight:-)

I like whipping it out in company, as it becomes an instant conversation starter. Nothing like discussing your huge unti with the ladies!

Android as an OS, in this case Gingerbread, is nice and smooth on the 1.5Ghz dual core processor, just as snappy as iOS, but somehow a lot more 'fun' feeling.

I'm not ready to root it yet and load an alternative ROM, but I definitely plan on it, since the AT&T stock version comes loaded with all kinds of Gitmo apps that have full permission to access your whereabouts and personal information like contacts, and are not uninstallable. Aholes.

Other than what I've mentioned, I really can't find any drawbacks yet. I will report back again soon.

Final note, an unmissable app for this phone and any Android device imho is Wave Launcher, which gives you one-swipe access to a custom menu of apps/bookmarks/files on any screen. It's not free, but pure value for value.

Using the Samsung Galaxy Note Permalink.

First update in what will probably be a series about my experience with the Note.

I've only used it for about 10 hours total so far.

Impressions:

A picture named img_img01.jpgSize is big as advertised. This was the entire reason I wanted it. I have big hands, so there is no detractor for use there, even one-handed use. Weight is light, doesn't tire in one hand. In short, it hits that sweet spot I was hoping it would between smartphone and tablet.

I call it a Phablet

The browser is fast (thanks to the dual core processor no doubt) and has all the features I expected. Nice to NOT have a page refresh when returning to it via back/forward arrows or changing browser screens. This is what I hate most about iOS

I am using K9 mail, which I already liked.

I've played around a bit with the pen. Although good, I won't use it for handwriting recognition, but certainly like taking screenshots that I can annotate.

I'm going to continue for a week to evaluate battery life, as another plus is the large capacity battery, but the sceen will probably offset that

After I'm done with testing, my next steps will be to secure it by rooting and installing a custom ROM.

If you have questions about the Note, put them in the comments and I'll see if I can answer anything relevant.
