When I held up this sign last week at #OccupyLA I was deadly serious.
If we truly want to spark a revolution, then we must move to independent ditribution of information. We cannot rely on corporate silos to reliably distribute out words, and worse, they are to easily abused by actors who want to hijack and change the message.
Our very own State Department (run by Hillary Clinton) has admitted they 'train' activists in social networking in other countries, no doubt with the goal of manipulating the message to suit the needs and desires of the administration and the corporations who own them. Just look at which companies are now moving into Egypt and Libya, literally escorted by the very people who supported the 'uprising'
Yesterday the new undersecretary of state, Wendy Sherman, refused to answer why the state deartment has not banned sale of certain internet equipment that is being used globally to monitor and censor the internet. (audio clip here)
The reason is simple; they won't ban these because they are using the same technology against our own people.
Dave Winer predicted this accurately at the start of the Arab Spring, and now it's here in the 'homeland'.
We still have a window of opportunity to dissimenate information reliably through protocols that are not owned by any corporation, such as RSS.
OccupyWeb.org is based on this very principle and is quickly becoming a reliable news source for the occupy movement.
There is a HowTo that shows how you can hook your news into the flow on this site.
Use it. Occupy the Web Now.
