So, Google Reader is changing, integrating itself into Google+
I understand a lot of people wish they had some form of control over how they veiw their rss feeds in Google Reader.
Personally, I like to see all my feeds in a 'river' of news.
Just for fun, I rolled my own version of a reader, with a combo of the river view that I like and the 'mailboxes' view that others dig so much.
I manage all of this in a point and click interface with the OPML Editor and the output is rendered through my World Outline. (screenshot)
From the river view I can also download pdocasts directly and RT stories to my blog, my tumblr and twitter with a single click. (Screenshot)
Best of all, I can manage my feeds on every computer I own. I never have to worry about synching of my feeds or views.
And, I get to use is on my own domain name: reader.curry.com
In may I decided to switch from my iPhone to an Android based phone. I've been updating on my experience, with the last post from the road in August, when I changed from the stock OS to Cyanogenmod.
While this isn't a path most consumers will take, I fully enjoy being able to manage more than just the apps on my phone and like all aspects of the experience I have created for myself.
A fully rooted, customized experience.
I doubt I will ever go back to Apple's mobile products, although I remain a staunch user of their desktops and laptops pre-Lion.
Nice to see after yesterday's call out to open source 'C' developers that Brent has offered to help clear out some of the cobwebs on the Frontier Kernel project.
This may be the missing link we needed.

This is a batsignal to all No Agenda producers who are skilled at open source development.
Our community has grown worldwide to such an extent that the tools I have been using to maintain the massive flow of information are in need of an upgrade.
The tools run on the Frontier platform, which has binaries available for Windows and Mac. In order to scale effectively to the next level of community growth and information flow, this platform must to be ported to linux.
It would enable us to open up the system I have carefully constructed, based on decades of Dave Winer's work, to hundreds of thousands of 'producers' who need accounts on the system and the capability to hook into a whole new architecture on the internet.
This is an open source project. The sources and documentation are already available.
Full Executive Producer credits will of course be given on the show and the system itself. But more importantly, you will be directly contributing to freeing up more of my time to watch CSPAN and assasinate the main stream media, as well as improving the quality and quantity of the information on the network and throughout the community.
Some examples of the output of the system to dat can be viewed at the No Agenda News Network, the Shownotes archives, the Podcast network that is streamed 24/7, and our domain forwarding initiative, which will take on an entirely new life if we succeed in the port to linux.
In the past few years I have seen many wonderful and productive open source projects blossom in the community. How many podcasts can claim to have a community that built an entire pbx system for the community? I only know of one.
I should also mention that another result of this project will be tools that will enable full on community programming of the No Agenda Stream in a decentralized fashion, that would make me feel comfortable enough to return to a mix of talk AND music.
My commitment to the project will be total immersion, and the return of The Daily Source Code podcast, where I will provide the user feedback loop, very similar to the early days of podcasting. In fact, podcasting was born on an earlier version of this very platform.
Just like that period in my life, Dave Winer and I have been working together again. This entire architecture is his brain child and I believe in some ways his life's work. I can't speak on his behalf, but am certain he and several other long time Frontier developers will be intimately involved if the No Agenda Developer Community hits this will full force.
Humbly, your Lone Wolf

(ps) There are several developer mailing lists, I am a member of all of them.
(pps) This plea is bound to illicit a lot of comments about alternative platforms. Pease don't waste your time. I've been drinking the Frontier/OPML Kool-Aid for too long for this to affect me.
I just finished reading my courtesy copy of the book "I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution"
It legitimizes what I've always said about MTV: The coolest shit on MTV never aired.
At a little under 600 pages, this is a big book. It is equal parts chronology of MTV as it is of the music video as an art form and a business. The story is told by the 'cast of characters' themselves, with an introduction by authors Craig Marks and Rob Tannenbaum at the top of each chapter.
This sometimes makes for a somewhat tiring read, as even I had to reference the 'cast' list in the back of the book several times to remember the person a paragraph or quote was attributed to. This style also allows for a very credible version of history. Co-author Rob Tannenbaum visited my house last year in Los Angeles and recorded over 5 hours of conversation, followed by numerous emails. My quotes are precisely as I recall saying them, so I assume the same is true for all participants.
Anyone who watched MTV and music videos in the 80's and 90's will enjoy this book, as it details the evolution of a revolution from all the angles. It filled in a lot of gaps for me, in particular about the making of the videos themselves. Many stories I had heard or witnessed personally, but the majority I hadn't.
For me the book also filled in a number of gaps of how and why certain events took place during my 7 year tenure at the channel. I now know with certainty that Axl Rose and Doug Herzog were responsible for replacing me as the host of Headbangers Ball. For that I say, fuck you very much. That show was my passion.
There's a lot of laundty airing in the book, which makes it exciting and fun to plow through, but also recalls fond and sweet memories of a time when a generation was coming of age. I'm definitely missing a lot of stories, characters and angles, but their omission in no way detracts from the documentarian's mission.
Speaking for myself, but I'm sure others will agree, as MTV slowly dissolved into the all-snookie-no-music-channel, it brings closure to the era and the people that lived it.
Music Television is over. Stick a fork in it, its done and it ain't coming back.
I'm grateful to the creators of this book for documenting an important time in my life, and for making me the coolest Dad every to my 21 year old daughter and her friends.

Earlier today I let up a trial balloon, and it soared immediately, receiving thousands of hits an hour.
As expected several people aimed their BB-guns, attempting to shoot it down.
I also learned that the idea isn't new. Max Keizer formulated it beautifully back in 2009. Max has already reached out to me in support of #occupycoke. Great. Max brings credibility and great insight.
This is a followup post to the OccupyCoke project. It is a message to the #OccupyWallStreet movement.
Take a look at this flag. It was posted by Adbusters, the originators of the #Occupy movement. It symbolizes the problem:
Corporations own the Politicians. Wall Street is the pimp.
If the 99% want to really show their power, then you have to get their attention.
Financial markets is the scoreboard. Just look at how much hoopla surrounds a new product release from Apple, people track the stock price like hawks.
If the "99%" can make markets move, if only on one major stock, the Corporations, Politicians and most certainly Wall Street will listen.
#OccupyCoke is designed to do just that. Companies listen to their customers, so do the analysts that follow their growth, as do the politicians who receive funding from them.
Move the stock, everyone notices.
Its the kind of power in numbers that will give the movement leverage. A big bargaining chip.
To rebutt a common criticism, moving a company's stock down 20 points won't put thousands of people out of work over night, nor will it bankrupt it. But it will disrupt the lifeblood of the system. Value, and thus cash flows.
Coca Cola is the perfect target for this type of action. Unlike Apple and Facebook, no one actually needs to drink coca cola. You can live without it for a month. It's logo is recognized globally, so signage is easy. And best of all, everyone can participate. How many times have we seen people turn their facebook icons and twitter avatars black, or green in protest of something? This time it will actually have an effect. Corporations don't like negative PR.
Best of all, when the stupid media comes around asking what you stand for you can repeat this simple mantra:
Corporations own the Politicians. Wall Street is the pimp. #OccupyCoke stops the funding of the 1%
Last night we were having dinner with some friends and I hatched a simple plan that may provide real action that anyone who sympathises with the global occupy movement can participate in. You don't even have to make a sign or camp outside!
The premise is simple: use our power as consumers to take down one of the largest, most profitable, influential and unnecessary corporations in the world.
By doing this, we will show real power. Power that can be repeated. Power so great that it will have corporations, governments and financial markets trembling in their boots.
I've registered a domain and set up a mini-manifesto at occupycoke.com
I made the Billboard Magazine list of [unofficial, but still amazing] tumblr blogs
I'm not sure exactly what it means, but I'm thankful for the traffic.
Now here's the cool part. I never actually post directly to my tumblr. I have simply linked my blog's rss feed to be sucked into tumblr, just like I do with twitter, which in turn flows into facebook (without me having to log in). My feed flows to ther places as well, like my old wordpress based blog.
"So I happily accept this award, and dedicate it to RSS"

Duff McKagan is certainly best known for his band Guns and Roses, as well as Velvet Revolver and his columns on ESPN.com. Now Duff has written a book about his life, which really reads more like a novel.
I haven't seen or spoken with him in over 20 years, but today he dropped by the studio to catch up and discuss his latest release.

Claire LaZebnik visits the studio today to talk about the release of her two (!) new novels. "Epic Fail" is a re-telling of Jane Austen set in celebrity Hollywood. "Families and other non-returnable gifts" is a lovely tale that will make you feel like your family isn't the only one that's a bit 'messed up' :-)

When I held up this sign last week at #OccupyLA I was deadly serious.
If we truly want to spark a revolution, then we must move to independent ditribution of information. We cannot rely on corporate silos to reliably distribute out words, and worse, they are to easily abused by actors who want to hijack and change the message.
Our very own State Department (run by Hillary Clinton) has admitted they 'train' activists in social networking in other countries, no doubt with the goal of manipulating the message to suit the needs and desires of the administration and the corporations who own them. Just look at which companies are now moving into Egypt and Libya, literally escorted by the very people who supported the 'uprising'
Yesterday the new undersecretary of state, Wendy Sherman, refused to answer why the state deartment has not banned sale of certain internet equipment that is being used globally to monitor and censor the internet. (audio clip here)
The reason is simple; they won't ban these because they are using the same technology against our own people.
Dave Winer predicted this accurately at the start of the Arab Spring, and now it's here in the 'homeland'.
We still have a window of opportunity to dissimenate information reliably through protocols that are not owned by any corporation, such as RSS.
OccupyWeb.org is based on this very principle and is quickly becoming a reliable news source for the occupy movement.
There is a HowTo that shows how you can hook your news into the flow on this site.
Use it. Occupy the Web Now.
No better way to celebrate the coming of age of the River of News than whipping up a new one today. Took me all of 15 minutes, including registration of the domain name: chemtrailpics.com
Currently I only have one feed: a search of twitter for the hashtag #chemtrails.
I can easily add a new one, email me if you want something added.
This project came about after the sudden appearance of 'Consistent Jet Contrails' on the very even of the explosion of the OccupyWallStreet movement globally. They may be connected. I don't believe in coincidences anymore.
The software that enables my data life celebrates it's 1.0 release milestone today.
River of News is a personal feed aggregator. It displays any feed I want in an output just like twitter (in fact, its how I read tweets) or facebook's news stream.
Only its better, because I control everything about it.
I use it to follow tweets and feeds from friends and people I never want to miss reading, I use it to read stories from around the world that the No Agenda producers find interesting and I even have one to track all 'noise' about Lady GaGa.
Its also my podcatcher, downloading shows into my dropbox for retrieval anywhere
You can run it on a server in the cloud, or on a laptop, mac or windows. And, its free.
Congratulations papa Dave!

Following along with Dave's worknotes, living on the cutting edge since these aren't 'officially' released.
I added the 'view outline' link to my World Outline template and gave it a try. It throws an error everywhere I try it:
500 Server Error Poorly formed XML text, we were expecting a tag. (At character #8994.)
The actual character 3 changes depending on the page I try it on.
I also updated scripting2.root in the hopes I'd get the nice layout Dave has on Scripting News. No Joy, I guess I need to reset my template to virgin status...
(postscript) It looks like something did change here on the blog after posting this. See the headline link. win!

Anthony, conservationist and author (Babylon's Ark, 2007), owns a wildlife reserve in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. A former hunting preserve, rumored to be part of the legendary Shaka's exclusive hunting territory, it has become a game reserve with a lodge for ecotourists. Home to Zululand's full suite of wildlife, Thula Thula had everything--except elephants. When he was offered a herd from another game reserve Anthony accepted wholeheartedly, despite the fact that these elephants were known escape artists.
