Here we are starring in the classic 'American Gothic'

Malvern, Ohio Permalink.

Yep, I'd never heard of it either, but Shickshinny Pensylvannia is the town we are just leaving as we make our way to the eastern seaboard. We'll reach Boston tonite.

Haven' t updated in several days, manily due to some very long drives and technical challenges, not with the blog, but ancilary stuff that ate up a lot of time.

First I need to back track to Ohio. After our lovely stay with Chuck, Dayna and the boys in Inverness Illinois, we drove all day Monday to Malvern, a pretty lake community 50 miles south of Akron. Our invitation came from Brian and Susy Morris, who actually delayed their own vacation by a full day and a half, so we could meet, have a nice meal together and receive instructions on their home, which they left entirely in our care for the rest of the week. How awesome is that?

A picture named malvernSmall.jpgTheir home is tucked away in a hillside, surrounded by maple trees and Susy's garden, that, as it turns out, supplies them with almost all of their food. Both Micky and I felt somewhat inadequate as we observed her skills in making her own pasta, baking sourdhough bread, pickling, conserving, etc etc. Any of the skills you might have seen on "Little House on the Prarie", you would find Susy doing with great finess and ease. Susy has a very successful blog where you can learn and follow at ChiotsRun.com

A picture named camperSM.jpgBrian blew me away with his home built replica of a 1947 'kit camper', fabricated by hand out of aluminium for the hull and all natural materials inside. He built it from plans he acquired on line, and this vacation is to be it's inagural run. How cozy does this thing look!

Although they both could easily be living off the grid entirely, they run a thriving video production business and enjoy the juice that flows to their array of high-end macs and Brian's prized espresso machine, an art piece of its own.

We hooked the Dutchess up to the 20 Amp circuit Brian had wired for us in the garage, water and CAT5 ethernet cable, connected to their business quality modem. Yah!

A picture named dexterSM.jpgThe setting couldn't have been more lovely, the rig surrunded by forrest, Cardinals and humming birds landing and taking off from the various feeders and of course the cats. Dexter came out to flaunt his muscular legs in an act of territorial warning, but soon became a fixture sprawled out near our side door, always ready with a freindly meow.

It is hard to describe the food Susy prepared for us, not the actual meal itself, because pasta and salad is easily identified, but the home grown and home made taste, texture and experience can only be summed up by the love that was baked right into it.

Tuesday's plan was to wave them off, and start working on taping some Big App Show appisodes with the green screen and my new light ring which Mr Smith and Baroness Maggie had shipped off to us. Unfortunately, my 'App Show Android Phone", which I normally only use on the wifi at the home studio had been exposed to it's Verizon network for quite a while and had received several system updates, bringing it up to version 2.2.2, seemingly and un-rootable version for the Galaxy S.

I need the phone rooted in order to run the application that allows me to grab a recording of my screen while demo-ing apps.

I mucked around for a couple hours until Shaun arrive to take us out 'shootin'

A picture named ar15SM.jpgShaun and Missy are also No Agenda producers and best frends with Brian and Susy. While Missy was preparing a lovely meal for us at their home, Shaun took Micky and I out for several hours of blasting water bottles with his AR-15 and close range target practice with an array of 22's and 45's. We've both handled Glock's before, but the Assoult Rifle was a new experience. Infinitely more precise and accurate than the AK-47's I'd handled in Iraq. I'm pretty sure we both will want to persue some form of firearm training and ownership in the near future. This was a great primer.

After a dinner of roasted chicken and bread with Missy's Mom's famous #11 home made strawberry jam, it was back to my exploits in rooting Android.

If you've every tried to google for a root procedure for your particular Android device, you will understand the frustrating hours I spent, without success, wading through forums and howto's that pretty much led to no joy. @AndroidBruce spent several hours with me actually placing the appropriate versions of busybox, and su by hand and command line into the appropriate directories and even he had to give up around 1:30am.

As an alternative strategy, I schooled myself in the art of loading Cyanogen mod 7 onto my Nexus S and caimed victory at about 4am, when I slid into bed next to Micky, who had given up on me hours earlier.

A picture named greenScreenSM.jpgDespite the grogginess of too few hours sleep, awakening in the middle of this nature was refreshing, and after a bit of setup, I did my first ever greenscreen production in an RV. The light ring and the portable greenscreen are well tuned to each other and the key worked beautifully. Still needed about 5 hours for all rendering and editing to be completed, leaving ample time to start prepping for thursday's show, but not for the planned romantice evening. That's rock 'n roll I guess :-)

After the show we drove Brian's supercharged mini cooper up to Akron for the meetup, in the Spaghetti Wharehouse, where producer Matt Frank had booked us a private room.

During the introductions I counted 20 sys admins, one Nuclear Engineer and one marketer and a mail carrier. Perfect No Agenda crowd!

Ohio really showed big support for the show, both in their stories of propagating the formula as well as the envelopes of donations we received, even though I'm pretty sure many are just living the president's dream of 'just getting by'.

Just like our othr meetups, it is so nice to hear how much difference we make in people's lives with the show. Mainly by bringing a smile and the occasional belly laugh to our community, slaves that we all are.

Snugly tucked into tthe Dutchess for the evinging's rest, I wondered how The Fonz was able to shut up nature's nightly sounds with the snap of a finger, but more importantly, why he would want to.

Friday arrived with a long trek ahead, about 9 hours to the Log House on the Lake in Schickshinny PA.

But before our departure, a few more lessons for the rookie RV-ers.

-Never lock up the house and terminate your possibilities of connecting to electricity and a landline before you have assured the rig is flight ready and will start.

-Never leave the 12-120volt inverter plugged into the dashboard plug for several days, as it will drain the battery. See learning moment above.

-Never park without having at least half a tank of gas, the generator won't run to recharge it's own battery (which can be used to start the engine) if under a quarter tank.

Thankfully I had enough juice in the genny's battery to fire it up for about 5 minutes until the petrol ran out, but that was just enough to crank the Ducthess back to life. Phew!

Looking at this post, I think it best to stop here, and write more tomorrow about our fantastic stay with Producers Michael and Sarah and their extended family Emma and Bobek. Can't wait to tell you all about it.

Inverness Illinois Permalink.

8/6/11; 11:18:56 AM by AC

In The Morning from Super Producers Chuck & Dayna's driveway in the Land of Lincoln!

We did our longest drive ever yesterday, nine hours from Nashville to here, which is about 30 minutes from Downtown Chicago.

Doing this trip in the connected world has a lot of advantages, we got a great recommendation via email to take Interstate 24 west until hitting I-57, which is not any of the google maps or Android navigation options. A very smooth and uncongested ride most of the way, although the road changed drastically once we hit the Kentucky state line, and again when we entered Illinois. Funny how that road work just ends at the state borders, a bit like old east and west Germany I guess. No offence Kentucky :-)

It was a lot of fun tweeting a hearty hello to the Human Resources in each new state and watching the tweets flow back in real time waving at the Dutchess as we sped northbound.

Right where the two interstates intersect, in Effingham, which is essential a huge truck stop, we were told to look for the Firefly Grill as a possible lunchstop. Again, bullseye. A culinary delight of homegrown and grass fed everything you'd want from the grill, with great organic iced teas in multiple flavours. And yes, actual espresso and cappucino, a rarity in these parts I can assure you.

I think I mentioned that we've been using the Android maps navigation for the entire trip. It is far superior to anything I've ever used on any platform, partially due to the google search integration, and voice recognition, which makes rerouting to something like the FireFly grill a snap when driving and much safer than the alternatives.

I've also love the time left to destination on these long drives. For me now 3 hours and 59 minutes means 'almost there' and the final hour on the display gets me in a really good mood.

Chuck, Dayna & the kids were hilarious upon our arrival around 8:30pm, they had their car out in the middle of the street with flashing lights on and Chuck waving two flashlights like we were landing an aircraft. After a nice meal of real Chicago pizza, salad from their own garden and a couple coronas, we of course stumbled into the guest room they had lovingly prepared for us with all the amenities, including a bed that felt like we were floating on a cloud.

Prior to all this of course we had Thursday's show and the Nashville producer meet up. The Nashville crowd wins hands down for most creative group we've had the pleasure of meeting so far. By now I have most of the names all mixed up in my scrambled brain, but I'm pretty sure Dave and Deb did all the arrangements with Sir Geoff Smith, who supplied the location and awesome entertainment at the Big Bang Bar.

A picture named tinFoil_sm.jpgI lost count at 25, but I think we came close to the Austin group in size, but when the tin foil hats were presented, we knew this meetup would be a special one. Add to the hats a full table of lovingly home made brownies, truffles, banana bread and rice krispie treats all packed with No Agenda trivia question, Geoff Smith's song he wrote specially for the occasion and performed live on stage and the producers who came from as far as Memphis and Paducha (!) Tennessee and you had the perfect gathering.

It was great to meet Lone Squirrel in person, as well as John Seward, who's excellent MailSteward program I've been using daily for over a year now and cannot stop raving about.

A picture named sirPatrick_sm.jpgAnd we had a live Knighting of Sir Patrick, who presented an envelop to complete his knighthood as well as 3 large decals for the Dutchess that will be affixed later today. You will love them, keeping 'em a surprise for now.

And here I sit, once again in the Dutchess, nicely parked in the shade, a/c is off, all the windows are open , where I'll be prepping tomorrow's show for the next 6 or 7 hours. I have a lot of work to do now that my prediction of a US downgrade came true, I can't just sit and gloat at JCD, I have to figure out why it actually happened, with this timing and what the broader strategy behind it is. Fucking elite$ keep me busy!

Reminder that tomorrow after the show there will be a Chicago meetup, I believe we might even see some people from as far as Wisconsin joining us...

So for now, as codified in the Urban Dictionary; Adios Mofos!

(ps) Do I have an awesome lady or what???

Amory, Mississippi Permalink.

8/3/11; 11:07:08 AM by AC

The title of this post is misleading, since I'm updating from the Two River's RV park on the north east side of Nashville Tennessee, but for sake of the archives its titled as such to reflect the contents.

After a night in Shreveport Louisiana, we continued our drive up north to visit Ryno The Bearded. Not his real name, but chatroomm monnikers are as real as it gets on the interwebs, and even after the 6 hour drive it felt entirely natural to hug this man who's done so much for the No Agenda Stream and the podcast itself and just call him Ryno.

A picture named dutchessShade_sm.jpgRyno lives about 30 miles south of the birthplace of Elvis (Tupelo) and shares a nice home in a wooded area with his dad and one of his brothers. A prime example of a Mississippi bachelor pad! The vast yard used to be a tree filled swamp, and Daddy Ryno was happy to tell me all about the 200 trees they had to remove and how many pickup trucks of dirt it too to convert it into a nicely grassed lawn with several beautiful trees providing ample shade for the Dutchess. Of course the guys have all the toys they need to make life as fun as possible; four wheelers, jet skis and 11 vehicles were parked with some order throughout the property. The mustang does the quarter mile in under 6 seconds I'm reliably informed.

We arrived around 6:30pm, after passing Mississippi University and the place known as Bum Fuck Egypt, Egypt Mississippi. You know you've been everywhere when you've actually passed through BFE!

A picture named rynosTube_sm.jpgWith 97 degrees and at least 60% humidity, we pretty much parked ourselves on the back porch and acquainted ourselves with our hosts and Allan, the Ford salesman aka Captain Negative who lives next door.

Once darkness set it, the beers kept flowing and it was time to light the grill for some real southern hot wings and ribs. But not until Ryno connected the propane tank to his infamous Rubens' Tube for a spectacular example of physics combining fire and sound waves into a great light show.

A picture named rynoMask_sm.jpgI'll be talking plenty about our nighttime fun with Ryno et al on the show (327.nashownotes.com), but rest assured we had many a belly laugh after dinner in the game room, where we continued our beer fest while shooting pool and playing youtube country songs. My favourite, hands down is the remake of Rupert Holmes 'pina colada song' by Sunny Ledford: Red Bull and Vodka.

We stumbled into the RV around midnight, bellies full, gullets wet and tounges still burning from the wings. Our faces stretched and hurting from all the laughs. They sure know how to party on a Monday night in Amory!

We slept in a bit Tuesday morning, ,8'oclock, imagine that! After discovering that my debit card had been cloned and almost $4000 withdrawn from our account back in LA and reporting it to my bank, we had a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and fruit courtesy of Ms. Micky.

Ryno then drove us 5 minutes out to Smithville, which was devestated by a tornado on April 27th. Although heartbreaking to see only concrete foundations where once entire neighborhoods stood, the amount of reconstruction and perseverance in getting life back on track by this community is a beautiful sight to see.

Concluding our tour of the area, we drove up to Tupelo to visit the birth home of Elvis Presly, a tiny 2 room structure with an elvis museum and giftshop also on the grounds. Somehow this felt better than going to Graceland. These extremely humble settings and surrounding area helped me understand the origin of the blues a lot better I'm sure.

We bid farewell to Ryno and again headed up north toward Nashville, grabbing the first 100 miles of the journey on the Natchez Trace Highway A beautiful area, but absolute hell to drive. 50Mph speedlimit (strictly enforced I was warned by many) and because of the trees you develop tunnel vision very quickly on the road and it just wears you out.

After a stop at a great roadside steakhouse thanks to a spot of googling, Micky took over to get us into Nashville around 7pm. We parked, hooked up, drank a corona in the setting sun and once again fell into a deep sleep.

I'm in the Rig right now, prepping for tomorrow's show. The weather is nice enough for me to sit inside with the a/c on and the door open (screened of course) and we are parked right next to the campground's wifi antenna. I've configured a manual ip address and my own dns servers, so hopefully it will provide for good connections for tomorrow's broadcast.

Micky is off to explore the city, as well as some 'girl time' i.e. claws and paws repair. Poor girl, RV life isn't easy when it comes to keeping up personal appearances, but man it still is a hoot load of fun!

Looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow night at The Big Bang for the Nashville meetup!

Shreveport, Louisiana Permalink.

8/1/11; 10:57:23 AM by AC

More accurately, I-20 east bound towards Mississippi. Ms. Micky is behind the wheel and we have about 7 hours drive today to our buddy Ryno The Bearded's house, which is 30 minutes from Tupelo Mi.

A picture named ac-Rig-Studio_sm.jpgYesterday was the best show we've done during the trip imho, mainly due to excellent connectivity. This thanks to the wifi provided by our host and one of my true friends, Greg Lawley in Austin Texas. Of course I did have to move the rig to another spot in front of the house in order to get the perfect reception, which meant plugging into a 15 amp circuit, precluding use of the airconditioner. Maybe when my brain is hot the show goes better as well :-)

We really, really loved Austin, and the drive up north to Shreveport was some of the most beautiful landscape we've seen on the trip. Lovely to see all the cattle eating grass, not that corn crap that makes it to most dinner tables in the country. They actually looked healthier, even from our 70mph drive by.

As we discussed on the show (episode 326), it's 'amazing' how a state where there is no personal income tax and the majority of citizens have or carry a gun, has such great infrastructure, beautiful roads, low crime and only 5% unemployment (government numbers, so lets just say 10%). How does that work? Must be the real American system that stil exists here.

We have been talking about Austin ever since we left as we are also blown away by the real estate prices. We won't be making any decisions until after the trip, but I think there is a high likelyhood we will return to Austin to look at places to live, as it really appeals to both of us. With thriving Music, Art and Media industries, it just might be perfect for us.

A picture named ac-Rig_exterior_sm.jpgBut we still have several thousand miles to go, we've clocked 3000 so far, and I'm happy to say that the dutchess is holding up nicely. We've gotten pretty good at RV life, I can do all the hookups in the dark, even after a 6 hour drive, and it's notable that after 3 days and 2 nights in a beautifuk manison with pool and airconditioning among the many amenities a luxurius lifestyle offers, we actually both were kind of happy to settle back into our mobile box. Funny how that works.

We rolled into the Tall Pines RV park around 11:30 pm, and after securing everything for the night, I had a nice Jack Daniels on the steps of the rig, enjoying the (relative) cool air of a star filled Louisiana night before slipping next to Ms Micky and into a deep peaceful sleep.

Loving listening to country radio in these parts. Not just the commercial pop stuff either. I didn't know that 'Slow Hand' was written by Conway Twitty. Always thought it was a Pointer Sisters original...
